What is PubMed? What is MEDLINE?

PubMed is a free database of biomedical citations from the National Library of Medicine. The largest portion of PubMed is MEDLINE, a database with 31+ million citations from 5,200+ journals.

Why would you search MEDLINE outside PubMed?

PubMed is not the only way to search MEDLINE. Other subscription databases include MEDLINE content, each offering varied ways to search the content.

In addition, there are also free alternative interfaces for searching PubMed content, and free tools have been designed to analyze MEDLINE content.

Finally, as concerns for the stability of US government-provided data grow, existing, non-US based tools are being proposed as alternative places to search.
