Key Updates for Week 8, ending February 22, 2025

Nationally, seasonal influenza activity remains elevated nationally but has decreased for two consecutive weeks. Data to date suggests the season has peaked; however, flu-related medical visits, hospitalizations, and deaths remain elevated, and CDC expects several more weeks of flu activity.

This season is classified as a high severity season overall and for all age groups (children, adults, older adults) and is the first high severity season since 2017-2018.

During the week ending February 22, 2025:
  • Influenza activity was categorized as geographically widespread. This is the 11th consecutive week of widespread activity reported this season.
  • Laboratories tested 59,082 specimens for influenza, of which 29,297 (50%) were positive, a 31% decrease in positive cases compared with the previous week.
  • The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 1,832, a 25% decrease in hospitalized cases compared with the previous week.
  • Of the 6,553 specimens submitted to WHO/NREVSS laboratories, 2,124 (32.41%) were positive.
    • 1,959 were positive for influenza A
    • 165 for influenza B.
  • The percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) from ILINet providers was 3.05%, below the epidemic threshold6 of 4.20%.
  • There were 38 outbreaks reported in hospitals and 24 outbreaks reported in nursing homes, a 28% decerease in hospital and nursing home outbreaks compared with the previous week.
    • Season to date, a total of 761 outbreaks have been reported from hospitals and nursing homes in NYS.
  • There were two influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week.
    • 15 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported this season.

  • 11,106 specimens were positive for influenza, a 29% decrease from the previous week;

    • 62% were positive for influenza A
    • 37% were positive for influenza B.
  • 903 specimens were positive for RSV, a 17% decrease from the previous week.
  • Influenza-like illness visits were at 9% of all weekly visits.
  • There was 1 influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week.
    • Season to date, a total of 7 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported.
  • There were 3 influenza outbreaks reported from long-term care facilities this week.
    • Season to date, a total of 112 outbreaks have been reported.
