Key Updates for Week 6, ending February 8, 2025

Nationally, seasonal influenza activity remains elevated and is higher than or similar to the highest it has been all season for each indicator reported in FluView. In addition, the percent of specimens testing positive for influenza at clinical labs and the rate of laboratory confirmed influenza associated hospitalizations reported to FluSurvNet are higher than any peak week going back to the 2015-2016 and 2010-2011 seasons, respectively

Based on data available this week, this season is now classified as a high severity season overall and for all age groups (children, adults, older adults) for the first time since 2017-2018.

During the week ending February 8, 2025:
  • Influenza activity was categorized as geographically widespread. This is the ninth consecutive week of widespread activity reported this season.
  • Laboratories tested 85,695 specimens for influenza, of which 48,543 (57%)3 were positive, an 11% decrease in positive cases compared with the previous week.
  • The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 2,837, an 11% decrease in hospitalized cases compared with the previous week.
  • Of the 6,072 specimens submitted to WHO/NREVSS laboratories, 1,769 (29.13%) were positive.
    • 1,696 were positive for influenza A
    • 73 for influenza B.
  • The percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI5) from ILINet providers was 6.09%, above the epidemic threshold6 of 4.20%.
  • There were 39 outbreaks reported in hospitals and 50 outbreaks reported in nursing homes, a 9% increase in hospital and nursing home outbreaks compared with the previous week.
    • Season to date, a total of 594 outbreaks have been reported from hospitals and nursing homes in NYS.
  • There were three influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week.
    • Twelve influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported this season.

Highlights for week ending February 8, 2025
  • 19,338 specimens were positive for influenza, a 14% decrease from the previous week;

    • 79% were positive for influenza A
    • 20% were positive for influenza B.
  • 1,315 specimens were positive for RSV, a 4% decrease from the previous week.
  • Influenza-like illness visits were at 12% of all weekly visits.
  • There were two influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week.
    • Season to date, a total of five influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported.
  • There were 19 influenza outbreaks reported from long-term care facilities this week.
    • Season to date, a total of 101
  • outbreaks have been reported.
