The Bioethics Ambassadors Program is an interactive educational program designed to promote - throughout all MSK sites - a deeper understanding of medical and clinical ethics and the ethical challenges that can arise during the delivery of oncology care, particularly in the out-patient setting.
An increasing number of MSK patients receive care at our outpatient and regional sites. These locations have access to MSK’s Ethics Consultation Service and other Ethics Committee programs, but both patients and staff would benefit from having on-site professionals with relevant Ethics knowledge and training who can serve as “bioethics bridges” between each location and the Ethics Committee and Consultation Service. Bioethics Ambassadors will develop the analytic tools to help identify (at an early stage) the common ethical challenges faced during the delivery of oncology care in their out-patient settings. They will raise awareness of medical ethics at their sites and will be prepared to assist colleagues in real-time when ethical concerns arise, including requesting assistance from the Ethics Consultation Service and participating in consultations, when appropriate.
Participants must virtually attend 13 monthly, interactive, 120-minute classes. Each class will introduce a different bioethics concept, theme, or issue that MSK staff routinely encounter in the out-patient oncology setting, taught by a member of the Ethics Consultation team and at least one expert on that topic. Prior to each class, participants will be required to read 2-3 articles and related materials (provided by the instructor), as well as answer/prepare/deliver remarks either in advance of, or during class. All participants must obtain approval from supervisors and/or site administrators.
The Bioethics Ambassadors Program will have 35 participants per year, and is open to all MSK team members: physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, administrative staff, leadership, etc., with an emphasis on staff from outpatient and regional locations. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and discipline-specific CME/CEUs credits.
