1) Auto-Generated Profiles/Identifiers
Auto-generated tools are basically ones where no author involvement is needed to populate the profile. All that the researcher has to do is do the research and publish the findings in a reputable journal – and then the rest is taken care of by the profile tool developer. However, because the author is not actively involved in deciding which citations should be added to their profile or not, the auto-generated options generally will have some kind of channel in place allowing the author to request corrections.
Examples of Auto-Generated Profile tools:
•Synapse (MSK Authored Works)* – https://synapse.mskcc.org/synapse
•Scopus Author Identifier – https://libguides.mskcc.org/scopus
•Web of Science ResearcherID – https://libguides.mskcc.org/webofscience
•Dimensions (Digital Science) - https://app.dimensions.ai/discover/publication
2) Opt-In Author Profiles/Identifiers
In the case of the opt-in tools, it is essentially up to the individual author to decide if they wish to register for an account. Once they do – these tools tend to give the account owner a lot of control over what gets added to the profile and whether the content is kept private or available for all to view. The downside of not having the profile auto-populate is that the onus to keep the profile accurate and complete falls entirely on the account owner. As such, the author will have to plan to return to the profile tool at a regular frequency to update it (semi-annually or annually, etc.), same as they would for their academic CV.
