Which Citation Manager Should I Choose?

I need to... Use: Why:
...work on a mobile device

Papers

Mendeley

PaperPile

Papers recently came out with a free iOS app that is separate from their desktop version but can be synced to your desktop account.

Mendeley has an iPad app, however it is best used to view your library, not do work in it.

PaperPile allows you to view all the PDFs in your collection through the Google Drive app on any mobile device.

...work without an Internet connection

Papers

Mendeley

EndNote and Papers are both desktop based products that run from your hard drive so you will have access to your personal library. Online searching will not work without an Internet connection.

Mendeley has a desktop component but it must be synced with an Internet connection.

...collaborate with colleagues

SciWheel

Mendeley

RefWorks

EndNote

PaperPile

SciWheel has private projects where members can share citations and full-text. You must be at an institution with SciWheel to create a project but can invite anyone from any institution to join a project.

Mendeley's free account allows a private group with up to 3 people where you can share a library and all members have access to full-text and editing abilities.

The easiest way to collaborate in RefWorks is to share a login account to edit references. To simply share references you can use RefShare from you individual account and send anyone a public URL to your library or a folder within your library.

EndNote 20 has sharing capabilities that work with EndNote Web where up to 200 people can be added to share your library through EndNote Web. You must remember to sync your desktop account to EndNote web for this to work. If you have multiple libraries, syncing will merge them.

PaperPile is designed for collaboration, but it must be within the Google (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs).

...use a non-MSK computer

RefWorks

Mendeley

Zotero

Papers

SciWheel

PaperPile

RefWorks is a web-based subscription product that MSK has a license for. You simply need to go to this RefWorks link either while connected to the MSK network or through remote access.

Mendeley and Zotero are both free for the basic accounts and can be downloaded on non-MSK computers.

Papers can be downloaded for $79 and can be installed on up to two computers.

SciWheel is tied to Faculty of 1000 which is a subscription database that MSK has access to. In order to use SciWheel you must create an account while on the MSK network, and after that you can access it from anywhere by logging in.

PaperPile can be accessed anywhere you can access your personal Gmail account.

...have assistance with using the product
