United States Federal Agencies involved in HIV/AIDS research

In January 2021, the FDA approved the first long-acting injectable treatment for adults with HIV. Cabenuva is a combo of two drugs (cabotegravir and rilpivirine) that you take as a shot once a month. It's considered a breakthrough in treatment since most HIV drugs require a daily dose.

The International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trial Network (IMPAACT) P1107 reported the first case of HIV cure in a woman living with HIV submitted to a dual stem cell transplant (i.e., an umbilical cord blood transplant combined with a half-matched bone marrow transplant) for treatment of an acute myelogenous leukemia.

In a presentation today at AIDS 2022, the 24th International AIDS Conference in Montreal, scientists with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC) and their collaborators described how their use of cutting-edge technology revealed new insights into cellular reservoirs of HIV and what those observations could mean for the next steps in HIV cure research.
