Naloxone prescribing resources, opioid prevention programs, training, and other resources

If taken differently than prescribed, opioids can cause death by slowing, and eventually stopping, a person's breathing. However, quick response to an opioid overdose, including administering naloxone and calling for medical assistance, can prevent brain injury and death.

The New York State 911 Good Samaritan Law allows people to call 911 without fear of arrest if they are having a drug or alcohol overdose that requires emergency medical care or if they witness someone overdosing.

All pharmacies in New York State may dispense naloxone through a standing order (non-patient specific prescription). This order enables more non-medical New Yorkers who encounter or witness an overdose to have naloxone available which, when administered in time, saves lives.
