Before submitting:
1) Ensure your data does not breach the 'Data Protection Act'
2) Ensure you have removed any Protected Health information
3) Ensure you have removed any identifying information
To submit:
Create Figshare account
Navigate to the “My data” tab
Click on the “+Create a new item button”
If you are uploading research files, choose one of the following
Upload files through My Data, where you can drag and drop files of up to 20GB
Use the FTP Uploader or the Figshare API (works better for large files)
If you are publishing outputs larger than 20GB or files larger than 20GB, Figshare recommends creating a Figshare+ account, which has a one-time cost associated with storing data larger than 20GB (up to many TBs)
If you are uploading through an institutional account, file size limitations may be larger; contact institutional admins to learn more
If you are not uploading files, you can create a linked record or metadata only record
Add descriptive metadata
Insert Title
Choose Item Type
Add Author (can sync with email or ORCID ID; authors do not need to have a Figshare account)
Select Category (taken from the Austrialian Fields of Research classification system. Choose the best fit, and clarify your topic further in the Keywords section if necessary)
Add Keyword(s) (can add as many as you want)
Write a Description
Add Funding Information. When typing in your funder institution, Figshare will search the Dimensions database for your funder and hyperlink to the Dimensions page for the institution. If your funding information does not appear in Dimensions, type in your information and don’t select anything from the drop-down menu at this stage. Once you’ve published the item, you can click on the Funding information to see more information
Add linkages to other research objects using Related Materials, providing information on the relation types. Figshare uses DataCite’s standard relation types. To add a citation to the dataset, you can add the relation types IsSupplementTo or IsReferencedBy. If you want to add a related dataset or Figshare Collection, use the IsPartOf relation type. You can explore the other relation types on DataCite, and add any that are appropriate to your work.
Select a license based on the reuse requirements for your data
Optional steps:
Add an embargo
Create a private link
Reserve a DOI
Add a custom thumbnail (will not be included with uploaded files and is purely a cosmetic feature to make you research stand out)
Click Publish Item (or Submit for Review if your institution has enabled the review workflow). Doing so, you’ll be prompted to check the license you’ve assigned and the terms of use. If your institution has review turned on, you will be prompted that your item will be sent for review before it’s made publicly available. Make sure everything you have submitted is accurate - once it’s published, it’s permanently available.
