2024 Measles Outbreaks

There have been 8 outbreaks (defined as 3 or more related cases) reported in 2024, and 69% of cases (91 of 132) are outbreak-associated. For comparison, 4 outbreaks were reported during 2023 and 48% of cases (28 of 58) were outbreak-associated.

Nationwide Measles Outbreak 2024: News & Updates
April
  • April 26 -- The West Virginia Department of Health (DH) is closely monitoring for transmission of measles following the state's first documented case since 2009. After confirming the first positive case on Monday, state health leaders have learned of 152 additional people who were potentially exposed, 128 West Virginia residents from 30 counties and 24 out-of-state contacts from four neighboring states. Sixty-two of those exposed in West Virginia lack documentation of adequate protection against measles and are considered at risk. The Bureau for Public Health is strongly recommending those exposed individuals with no evidence of immunity against the virus quarantine until May 9 or 10, 2024, depending on their last date of exposure. 
  • April 23 -- The Vermont Department of Health has confirmed a case of measles in the state. The case is in a person in Vermont who is part of an international group program.It’s the state’s first confirmed case of measles since 2018. The Health Department says it was informed on April 10 by the Georgia State Public Health Department that the group had been exposed to a traveler with measles after their flight into Atlanta.
  • April 22 -- An infected individual traveled to the event at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis on April 8 from out of state, the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) said in a news release late Friday afternoon. 
  • April 22 -- The West Virginia Department of Health has confirmed the first case of measles since 2009 in a Monongalia County resident. The person was undervaccinated and had recent international travel.
  • April 15 -- A Cicero adult has contracted measles, marking the second case in suburban Cook County this year. The Cook County Department of Public Health said there is no known connection between the Cicero measles case and the Chicago migrant shelter. 
  • April 14 -- DuPage County (IL) health officials announced on Saturday that a county resident tested positive for measles, the first case identified in the county since 2009. The source of exposure is currently unknown, but officials say it is not related to the Chicago outbreak.
  • April 13 -- A case of measles has been confirmed in a non-Los Angeles County resident who traveled throughout the county two weekends ago, officials said Saturday.
  • April 12 -- Officials from the Southern Nevada Health District Friday confirmed a measles case on the Las Vegas Strip by a person who traveled to Las Vegas from out of state.
  • April 12 -- A third case of measles has been confirmed this year in Georgia, according to the state Department of Public Health. Public health officials said the person was unvaccinated and was traveling with students internationally. The person does not live in the U.S. and is isolating at a local hospital for treatment, officials said.
  • April 11 -- The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated individual traveling with an international group of students. The individual, who does not live in the United States, is isolated and receiving treatment at a local hospital. 
  • April 9 -- A 4 year old from Detroit has a confirmed case of the measles, and potentially exposed others while seeking treatment for the highly infectious virus at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, an urgent care center and a pharmacy in the city, the Detroit Health Department announced
  • April 5 -- Will County (IL) health officials report positive measles case at ER in Joliet hospital, the second one in the county
  • April 1 -- Officials with the County of San Diego have confirmed a second case of measles in 2024 in a 47-year old resident who recently traveled overseas and has been hospitalized.

Chicago Migrant Center Measles Outbreak: March 2024

On March 8 2024, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified its first case of measles since 2019. The case was identified in a resident at a new arrivals shelter in Pilsen and the City of Chicago is responding with a host of resources in order to protect residents at the shelter. The case of measles was identified in a young unvaccinated child.
